Statewide School Choice Parent Advisory Council Formed
Article Submitted by: Bill Storms
On September 17th, the first conference call meeting of the newly formed “Statewide School Choice Parent Advisory Council” (PAC) occurred. This is a new resource for parents which will provide information, options for feedback, mentoring and assistance with all Choice options. The statewide committee is the first step in establishing a three tiered support structure which will include regional and local advisory committees. This statewide group, composed of School Choice stakeholders including parents, school district Choice leaders, and others with a special interest in School Choice, will be a resource to share information with and gather feedback from parents throughout the state for issues and concerns related to School Choice. Coupled with our Parent Resource Centers, the Parent Advisory Committee will pursue its mission that “All Florida parents will be informed about all educational options and opportunities.”
During the conference call meeting, Chairman Bill Storms led the group of prospective members in a discussion to prepare for the start-up of the statewide council. The group reviewed the proposed Administrative Guidelines for the operation of the PAC, and found them to be acceptable. The group also reviewed and accepted the Mission Statement and discussed the approach and format to be utilized for the next PAC meeting and orientation in Orlando on November 18, 2008. The prospective members then determined their willingness to serve, and those who committed will receive a Certificate of Appointment from Florida Commissioner of Education, Dr. Eric J. Smith.
These PACs will provide an exciting new level of support for ALL CHOICE OPTIONS in Florida.
