There are some promising practices for optimizing the dollars spent to keep innovations moving ahead and help teachers deal with increased workloads and limited prep time. NIEO professional development services can be provide regional services in a multidistrict approach that encompasses many schools with similar goals and issues. Weekends, after school and during prep professional development are common ways to lower the travel and substitute costs. Granting college credit, as well as continuing education credit, can help teachers maximize their time and gain the most rewards.
It is important to find ways to keep teachers feeling supported and part of positive change. Visit http://www.schoolofed.nova.edu/nieo/srss.htm for ideas.
The Southeast Coalition of Essential Schools Center (SCESC) is providing a menu of services for their member schools and districts. Critical Friends training is now available from a certified specialist, as well as a variety of networking and professional development events for secondary educators. While all the member districts are feeling the effects of budget constraints, deeply discounted events can be a big help and SCESC can provide them. Check them out at www.southeastces.org and consider joining this consortium of school districts. |
