Record Setting Day In The Life Of A NurseTMArticle Submitted by: Constance Scotchel-Gross More than 1,000 students from 71 middle schools and high schools in six South Florida counties participated in the Consortium’s Day in the Life of a NurseTM. “We had great participation on the organizing committee this year and the result is that more students, schools, and clinical facilities took part than ever before,” remarked Nora Triola, Holy Cross Hospital CNO and Chair of the Consortium’s High School Initiatives Committee, which organized the event. “We are especially grateful for the continued enthusiasm that all the region’s school systems have for this program. All have been wonderful and engaged partners throughout the planning process and have even issued proclamations recognizing November 14, 2008 as Day in the Life of a NurseTM Day.” This year, students attending public and private schools in Broward, Glades, Hendry, Miami Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties participated. Once again, the program included a teacher training and curriculum development component, and updated best practices tool kits were provided to clinical facilities. For the first time, participating student surveys are being conducted online this year. “We have measured student attitudes towards nursing and their knowledge of the profession for a number of years using paper surveys administered at the beginning and end of the day. Now we have made it possible for students to provide this information before arriving at the clinical facility and after leaving it, giving us more time to engage the students during the day,” explained Consortium President and Palms West Hospital CNO Silvia Stradi. The Day in the Life of a NurseTM program has taken place in South Florida each year since the Spring of 2000. The program was held twice in 2006 and has since been observed on the second Friday in November.
