Amy Makler, 17, a student in the Allied Health Sciences Academy, recently received her CPR certification as part of the academy’s curriculum by the Red Cross. Not too long after receiving her certification, she was able to utilize the skills she learned in a life-threatening situation that occurred while she was working at a Wendy’s on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

An elderly woman was having dinner with her family when she stopped breathing. Amy heard the daughter of this woman cry for help and immediately ran to help the woman in distress. They laid the woman on the floor. Amy quickly ascertained that the woman was not breathing, no pulse rate was detected and her lips were turning blue. She immediately began to administer chest compressions while instructing the daughter to administer the mouth-to-mouth breaths on her command. A few moments later, the woman began to breathe again.

Amy would like to pursue a career as a Veterinarian. She currently volunteers at the Fort Lauderdale Wildlife Care Center where they have spoken with her regarding the possibility of offering her a 12-week internship in the coming months in their Veterinarian Assistant program. We are very proud of Amy!
