Bayshore BIZ Journeys to the Big Apple

By Lil Maddox

Bayshore Business Academy students once again started their spring break on an exciting educational journey, this year to the Big Apple.  Twenty-four students and teachers representing the BIZ, a small learning community whose curriculum focuses on business management, entrepreneurship, business law, and careers, flew to New York for this “once-in-a-lifetime” adventure which included many educational and cultural activities.

Upon arriving at JFK, enjoying lunch, and exploring the historic Grand Central Station, students took a walking tour of the financial district, Wall Street, and Ground Zero.  They also had an awesome virtual tour of NY at the Empire State Building prior to going up to the observation deck of the building to see the city lights.

Day two found the students having a behind-the-scenes tour of Macy’s, the world’s largest department store with over 2 million square feet of retail space.  In addition to learning a little about the history of Macy’s, the group also learned about merchandising concepts and visual techniques used in the store.

That evening the group enjoyed the hilariously, funny “Shrek the Musical” on Broadway.  “Broadway” has become the worldwide name in theater entertainment, and simply being able to experience the culture and passion of the finest theater in the world, was an incredible experience for these young people. Theater on Broadway dates back to 1810 when most actors were imported from European countries, and throughout the 1900’s Broadway shows were strongly influenced by the events of the time, such as prohibition, the stock market crash, etc.

The trip also included a ferry ride to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, a Knicks basketball game, a visit to the Museum of Natural History, a carriage ride in Central Park, and a visit to Madam Tussaud’s Wax Museum.

Armed with signs, banners, Bruin bear mitts, and a lot of determination, the group arrived at the Today Show studios by 5:30 a.m. on their last day in NY, hoping to get on TV when the outside segments were filmed.  After standing in the rainy, windy, cold New York weather, the entire group shook Al Roker’s hand as he made his way around the audience.  A number of students, who stuck it out, were filmed at the end of the broadcast.  Although they did not get interviewed, everyone enjoyed the experience.

This New York outing is the fifth annual out-of-state trip by the Bayshore Business Academy.  Expenses for the trip were covered by grant money, individual participants, and donations from the community.  The Business Academy wishes to thank everyone who supported this endeavor; it truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students, as evidenced by a statement by 10th grader Nina Berithova, “New York was an exciting experience that I’ll never forget, and I definitely hope to return someday.”
