Braden River High Students Visit Tallahassee

By  Kelli S. Kennedy, Academic Advisor

On February 26, 2009 Braden River High School in Bradenton, Florida, had the pleasure of participating in the Florida Department of Education’s Academy Showcase.  A student from each academy along with Kelli Kennedy, Academic Advisor, spent the day in Tallahassee speaking to the people who work in the Department of Education about how academies have impacted their lives and their career choices.  The students got to participate in a hallway dedication for the CTSO’s and even “stood in” for some of the state officers of the organizations in hanging their pictures next to the emblem of their state organization.  The students got to meet Alex Sink, Florida’s CFO, Lucy Hadi, Chancellor for Workforce Education, Loretta Costin, Vice-Chancellor for Workforce Education, and Theresa Marsenburg, Co-Anchor of Capitol Update of the Florida Channel.  Also in attendance were students and instructors from St. Johns and Duval counties.  One student remarked that “it’s always cool to see what other kids are doing around the state”.  Participating students were Kaycee Wells, Arts & Communications, Kiera Walker, Science Technology & Health, Caleb Parker, Business & International Studies, and Alexandra Villalobos, Engineering & Leadership.

Braden River opened in 2005 as Manatee County’s first wall-to-wall academy high school and has grown to have four academies:  Arts & Communications, Business & International Studies, Engineering & Leadership, and Science Technology & Health.  Our faculty has a strong commitment to the academy model and all four of our academies are certified by the National Career Academy Coalition.  The integrated education that our students receive, we believe, is one reason our school was rated and “A” last year.  However, more important than any school grade is the real world education that our students receive that prepares them for higher education and the world of work.
