Florida Charter School Conference a SuccessArticle Submitted By Julia Somers-Arthur, DOE, OIEPC What do you get when you bring over 500 educators together for three days, add forty presentations, workshops and demonstrations on topical issues by leading experts, and season with opportunities to connect, share ideas, network and win door prizes? You get the synergy of the Thirteenth Annual Florida Charter School Conference! Themed “Charters – Not Just Another Public School!” the conference, is the thirteenth and largest of the annual Charter School Conferences. Held in Orlando from the 16th – 18th of November, this year’s conference drew 513 registrations, 130 more than last year. Adam Miller, DOE Charter Schools Director, is pleased with the success of the conference. “This has been our biggest so far, and I think our best.” Feedback from the conference supports this. “I thought this conference was the best one I have attended over my 12 years with the charter schools,” wrote one attendee. Another stated, “The conference was great! I have been an educator for 30 years and this is one of the best conferences I have ever attended. It was evident that a great deal of planning had gone into making the conference a success!” The 2009 conference, presented by the Florida Department of Education in partnership with the Florida Education Foundation, made a special effort to bring together stakeholders from all facets of the charter school movement by offering dynamic keynotes from noted education reformer Kevin Chavous and educator and author Annette Breaux, and by developing special sessions aimed at the concerns of authorizers, school governing boards and administrators, and teachers. Scheduled in conjunction with auxiliary events including the Town Hall Meeting, the School Choice Summit, and the CSP Grant Recipients Training Workshop, the conference offered something for everyone.
