Differentiated Instruction is a technique that must be implemented in today’s classroom for all subject areas.  Differentiated Instruction is an approach to teaching that advocates active planning for all student differences.  It permits the classroom teacher to modify activities to ensure that all students master essential and enduring knowledge.  Its goal is to maximize the potential of all learners.

In order to have a successful year, teachers should get to know their students by giving them different inventories, such as a getting to know me packet or scheduling classroom interviews.  These types of activities will help the classroom teacher to understand the types of learners your students are.  Knowing your students is the foremost component in planning for instruction and learning centers.  Learning centers are the key ingredient of differentiated instruction.

We have developed a list of reasons to share with you that reinforce the importance of using learning centers to implement differentiated instruction in your classroom.

Learning centers will:

  • Enable learners to make decisions, follow directions, and self evaluate
  • Encourage active participation among all learners
  • Allow learners to work in alike and mixed ability groups
  • Give students an opportunity to learn responsibility and organization
  • Help students gain more information about students
  • Incorporate student interests when planning instruction
  • Provide opportunities for cooperative learning experiences

When beginning learning centers, they should be displayed as a systematic rotation that is easy for your students to understand.  An uncomplicated schedule should show any age student where to be and where to go next.  A schedule that can change with minimal effort is ideal for all teachers.  Three materials that you can use to create your learning center schedule are: a poster board, a pocket chart, or a magnetic board.  If you have any of these items available in your classroom already, you are on your way to implementing learning centers.

We would love to share our knowledge on differentiated instruction with your school. We are co-founders of Learning Centers to GO, Inc., which customizes centers for teachers. These pre-made and prepackaged centers enable educators to take them back to their classrooms and start using them right away. Please visit our website at learningcenterstogo.com.
