City of Hialeah Educational Academy High School
The City of Hialeah Educational Academy opened in August 2008 and serves approximately one hundred 9th graders. A small school on the exterior, its interior holds an eager group of teenagers who are challenged to face real-life situations. Students take regular core classes alongside one of their electives called Principles of Public Service, which teaches them the ins and outs of criminal justice, first response, and firefighting careers.
On a daily basis students are seen doing simple things like push-ups to difficult tasks like wearing bite sleeves and being attacked by K-9 dogs. Students undergo realistic demonstrations carried out by police officers, swat officers, paramedics, firefighters, and other first responders. They work on campus and travel to the police and fire stations in the nearby vicinity. The school works in conjunction with the city of Hialeah to create and maintain this criminal justice and first responder curriculum.
Students have positive things to report about the school. Albert Toledo said, “I am more focused. I’ve been through positive changes, and I like the first response education.” His classmate Jacklyn Matos shares his sentiments. She enthusiastically spoke about how the school has helped her become a better person by increasing her initiative to help others in need. “We do many fun activities in Public Service,” she added. Not only does the curriculum teach students about various first response careers, but students have a great time partaking in interactive demonstrations. It’s not everyday that fifteen-year-olds work fire hoses, resuscitate CPR dummies, and see swat officers rappel from the roof.
First response and criminal justice are the major themes of the school, but those subjects are on equal footing with all the other classes. Students are also expected to do well in core classes taught by highly qualified personnel. Because technology is necessary to succeed in the targeted career areas, core classes immerse students into technology with various reading and math computer programs, as well as computer-based projects. The school raises the bar by expecting students to excel in both academics and character—the school logo is “honor, respect, and loyalty.” This new school started with a 9th grade student body in 2008-2009 and will also be opening its doors to 10th graders for the 2009-2010 school year.
