First Charter School Student as MDCPS District SGA President

By Alice Estevez

Priscilla Morales, junior at Mater Lakes Academy has been elected as Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Student Government Association District President. This is the first-time that a charter school student has been elected as the district SGA President.  Elections for Student Government Association Officers were held on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the School Board Auditorium.

Priscilla is a hard-working student who is extremely involved in school, and this next step will make her a great leader in this county. Priscilla has participated in the Close-Up program, where she and 25 of her peers at Mater Lakes Academy had the opportunity to learn more about the inner working of our government and were able to attend many classes and meetings in which they learned how to better their community and their own lives.

Priscilla also participated in the Model UN competition that was held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the University of Miami, and though she didn’t place in the competition, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to go through that experience. Priscilla is also an honor roll student who is currently taking three Advanced Placement classes and is also part of the dual-enrollment program at Miami-Dade College.

She is also on her third year as Student Government President at the school and is an active member of the C/O 2010, NHS, and Key Club. She also participates in various community projects. Reaching this milestone will allow her to leave her mark on MDCPS.
