Charters Rise to the Challenge in Hillsborough!

Submitted by: Hillsborough County Charter Office: Patti Simmons & Donna Weill

Some media attention and pundits would lead us to believe that charter schools are a risky experiment, but in Hillsborough County, Florida, charter schools are rising to the occasion in many different settings.  With 27 charter schools operating during the 2009-2010 school year and another 6 schools slated to open next year, the accomplishments of charter schools in Hillsborough are hard to miss.

In just the past year, Learning Gate Community School was honored as a finalist in the Governor's Serve to Preserve Green Schools Award Program.  Along with this, Terrace Community Middle School was designated a National Blue Ribbon School by the USDOE.  Not to be outdone by its peers, Village of Excellence Academy had a first place winner in the Hillsborough County Science Olympics for 2nd grade. Along with these awards, many teachers in the charter schools received merit pay for their outstanding teaching and achievement results.  These are just a sample of the many accomplishments that Hillsborough County charter schools have made.

As we look to the future, we know that this success is sure to continue.  Our charter schools have forged a successful relationship with the district staff to help ensure the success of every student while maintaining their entrepreneurial spirit.  Congratulations Hillsborough County charter schools!
