YCCS Journalism Club Participates in Fairchild’s Intergenerational Interviews
Experience is the best teacher. For the members of the Journalism Club in Youth Co-Op Charter School, the field trip to the Fairchild Botanical Garden for the intergenerational interviews is one such case. During the event, students from various schools not only learned about plants, but also learned how to find out background information, interview, observe, and share. Alison Walker, the education outreach community coordinator of Fairchild, first spoke about various plants found here in Florida that are used for food and medicine such as the saw palmetto, black willow, and cocoa. Then students were able to expand on this knowledge by interviewing the elderly about herbal medicines. Nellie Hernandez, who was interviewed, told the students how in her experience herbal teas can help cure throat problems, how tomato leaves can be used as antiseptics, and how apple peels when boiled can help people with sleeping problems.
